Selling in 3D

Why your HiveCPQ configurator deserves real materials

A 3D configurator is not a tech demo. It is a sales tool, often the first time a customer sees the exact product they are about to buy. How that product looks decides whether they trust it.

HiveCPQ exists to simplify selling complex products: machines, doors and windows, HVAC units, vehicles. The moment you put a 3D configurator in front of a buyer, the rendering becomes part of the pitch. And the single biggest lever on how believable that rendering feels is not the model. It is the materials.

The plastic-toy tax

Everyone recognises a cheap 3D preview. Flat grey surfaces, a plasticky sheen on everything, colours that do not quite match the RAL swatch the customer picked. It reads as a placeholder, and a placeholder invites doubt: is this really what I am ordering? Is this company precise about the things I cannot see?

For a configurable industrial product, precision is the whole promise. A preview that looks approximate quietly undercuts it.

What "real" actually means

Physically based rendering (PBR) describes a surface the way light does: how metallic it is, how rough, how it bends light across its bumps. Get those right and a brushed aluminium panel catches a highlight like brushed aluminium, a powder coat scatters light like a matte finish, glass is genuinely translucent. The brain stops noticing the rendering and starts evaluating the product.

That is the goal: not to show off the graphics, but to make them disappear, so the customer is looking at their configuration and not at a computer graphic.

The best material is the one nobody comments on, because it simply looks like the thing it is.

From configurable to convincing

HiveCPQ already gives the buyer control: pick the finish, the colour, the size, the options. Real materials close the loop by making each of those choices visible and credible in the same instant. Choose RAL 7016 anthracite and the panel turns the exact anthracite. Switch from painted steel to stainless and the surface changes character, not just colour. The configurator stops being a form with a picture attached and becomes the product.

Why we built a library for it

Getting materials right by hand, per project, is slow and inconsistent. So we built a library of industrial materials that are correct by construction and validated for the web, ready to drop into a HiveCPQ configurator. Powder coats across the RAL range, brushed and cast metals, rubbers, plastics, filaments, glass, sheet metal, plus the hardware and lighting to dress a scene.

The result is that a convincing configurator is no longer a per-project art project. It is a shelf you pick from.
